I began this series of "Distance As" drawings on March 12, 2020, when New York City declared the state of emergency due to the Covid_19 pandemic. The imposed social distancing rules and the closing of borders between US and Europe separated me from many of my loved ones. It was daunting not to know when I would see my lover, my mom, my family and friends next. To overcome this distress I began to contemplate the painful idea of "distance" through a daily drawing ritual. One drawing a day, same theme, medium, same background, but with changing feelings and forms. The process has kept me grounded. Ironically, "distance” transformed into an intimate, ever-expanding metaphor that I approach anew each day. It has opened up a space of healing and connection with those I miss. Today, 101 drawings into the new world, I realize we may never be going back to the way we were. We will need to cope with distance and how it carries us together into the future, towards solutions we have yet to imagine.
